Heatwaves Awareness Education through Online Learning, or HEAT project funded via the European Commission aims is to create a new comprehensive climate education framework by analyzing and building upon existing climate education frameworks and online instructional design models. As a result we created an interactive game and a series of courses for school children that they can learn about climate change and the effect of urban design on heatwaves.

Challenge
With the growing impact of climate change, there is an urgent need to educate secondary school students about the environmental challenges they face, particularly heatwaves and their connection to urban design. However, existing climate education frameworks are often fragmented and not easily adaptable for both online and face-to-face learning environments, limiting their reach and effectiveness.
Solution
The Heat project developed a comprehensive climate education framework by analyzing and enhancing existing climate education models and online instructional design approaches. Using this framework, the project created heatwave awareness materials tailored for secondary school students, ensuring the flexibility to deliver the course both online and in the classroom, making it more accessible and engaging.
Results
As a result of the Heat project, an interactive game and a series of courses were developed to teach school children about climate change and the influence of urban design on heatwaves. These tools provided students with an engaging, educational experience, equipping them with the knowledge to understand and address climate-related issues in their own communities.
